Lakes are used all over the world to store power reserves in the form of water that is kept at a higher level so that it can be passed through a dam to generate power through the conversion of the potential energy of the water.

Typically this is at utility scale, though in Canada there are a few smaller lakes where individuals have used small dams to provide their houses with power.
